PRP and LLLT as adjunct therapies: what are people actually seeing in terms of maintenance?
Hey everyone, hairtransplant here. Starting a quick thread to talk about adjunct therapies like Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). We see a lot of questions about these in the forum, especially from guys trying to figure out if they are worth adding to an existing routine or using post-procedure to support native hair.
First off, just the usual reminder: this is strictly for community discussion and sharing experiences. I am a moderator, not a doctor, so nothing here counts as medical advice. Always talk to a qualified dermatologist or surgeon before changing up your regimen.
Now, let's look at PRP. The basic idea is drawing blood, spinning it down in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting that plasma back into the scalp. Clinics often pitch it as a way to kickstart miniaturizing hairs or to help grafts recover after a transplant.
Realistically, experiences vary wildly. Some members report that a series of initial sessions followed by maintenance every six to twelve months helped slow down shedding and added a bit of density to thinning areas in the mid-scalp or crown. Others feel like they spent a lot of money out of pocket for very little visible change. Pain levels during the injections also seem to differ person to person—some say it is barely a pinch, while others find it pretty brutal without a nerve block or ice.
Then we have LLLT, which covers everything from in-office laser caps and bands to combs you run through your hair at home. The theory here is that specific wavelengths of light stimulate cellular activity in the hair follicles, theoretically improving blood flow and extending the growth phase.
With lasers, consistency is usually the catch. Most devices require you to wear them three times a week for twenty minutes or so, indefinitely. If you drop the habit, any maintenance benefit tends to fade. Second-hand reviews on here suggest that LLLT rarely works as a standalone fix for advanced hair loss, but a few users find it helpful as a supportive tool alongside medications or after a transplant to help manage shedding.
How about you guys? Have you tried either PRP or LLLT? If you went the PRP route, did you notice a visible difference, or did it feel more like an expensive maintenance step? And if you use a laser cap, do you actually stick to the routine long-term? Let's hear what your real-world experience has been.
